Pat Tilman
One of the Sunday talk shows had as a guest today the man who wrote a book about the incident. It was such a tragedy: Tilman's death, the cover-up of the fact that Tilman was killed by friendly fire, not enemy fire, General McChrystal's admission that he did not read carefully the letter explaining why Tilman received the Silver Star. From Colin Powell's cheerleading for the invasion of Iraq, McChrystal's need for thousands more troops in Afghanistan, to his admission that he didn't read a document carefully? This is probably a naive admission on my part, but I have no more faith in military leaders. My Father was in the first World War, my uncles were in the Second, my cousins were in Korea and Viet Nam. I was and still am proud of them and their service; but I am more proud of the fact that not one of them made it a career. It seems to me that careers can swallow people up and cause them to do things and to trust people whom they never would have sanctioned before becoming 'company people'.
